SEO Silo Structure for Optimized Landing Pages

Doing a lot of research on “SEO Silo Structure” for websites. It seems to have quite the high amount of controversy whether this works or is just a theory. To me this seems like a logical way to outline a website. With good SEO techniques and every possible SEO feature included such as meta description, Google Schema’s, etc I think it is a valid option for ranking and having a clear path for visitors to go through.

This is an infographic I made real quick to help me understand how to lay out an SEO Silo structure. The homepage of your website gives a clear path for each Keyword – each main keyword is a navigation link. Think of it as a category. Then within each keyword page are multiple posts, which modify the first keyword. For example, your first page is “Peanut Butter” and then your inner post pages would be modified on that keyword. Post titles like, “How to Make Your Own Peanut Butter” and/or “Alternatives to Peanuts”

Taking your first keyword and expanding it – however for each “keyword page” or Silo you have to be specific on that keyword. If you have three keyword pages, make sure to link all relevant modified keywords to the specific page keyword. That sounds confusing, but mainly keep a good flow or path for your visitors to follow.

Why Follow a Silo Path?

You are doing this to optimize for two things: Search Engines and Collecting Leads! You do this by making a specific landing page per Keyword. So, each modified keyword post links to a optimized landing page for that specific keyword. This helps you segment your mailing list AND increase optin leads by speaking directly to their keyword (that they found through searching).

May seem like a lot of work however with some good implementation this could work very well.

The debate about SEO Silo Structure is all about whether it works and who it’s designed for. It’s designed for visitors coming from search engines. Not just for search engines. You want a website that still provides value, has clear navigation and optimized for search engines.

Redesign The Wheel

I have been doing some PHP work and slowly working on my own SEO Silo CMS. This will allow people to install a script on their hosting – much like WordPress – but specifically to create this SEO Silo type website. I have been working on this and feels like I am trying to recreate WordPress – however this is different! Without the clutter and annoyances of installing many plugins to get a structured website going. I am doing it all within one CMS.

When will this software be available? Will it cost money? To be announced ! :)

My pet peeve about every discussion of siloing that I’ve seen is that they use screamingly obvious (and easy) product-based examples. If you’re selling shoes, the silos fill themselves with simple one- and two-word keywords — men’s shoes, women’s shoes, children’s shoes, formal shoes, casual shoes, and on an on.

Where are the examples of more complex situations such as courses that teach people how to enter into a specific type of career? Here, the keywords are not so simple (“how do I become a forest ranger” or “how do I apply for a forest ranger job” or “what skills do forest rangers need” for example) and not so easy to deploy in a WP setting.

I’d love to hear one of the silo experts expound on how to make siloing work in this kind of situation.
